PAT HUME, aged 83

An unsung hero of the Northern Ireland Peace Process, Pat Hume, wife of SDLP politician John Hume made a largely unrecognised contribution to ending the Troubles in Northern Ireland. She was the consumate politician’s wife, whilst bringing up her family.

YVONNE POPE SINTES, aged 90

She always wanted to fly but faced an uphill struggle to achieve her aims. She became Britain’s first female air traffic controller and then the first woman commercial pilot. She was a ‘Trailblazer in Flight’.

Later to be an accomplished architect, Gilbert’s war service was particularly unusual. He belonged to a military unit that officially never existed: The Ghost Army.
