Originally a secretary to the stars in the sixties, she became a well-known railway station announcer. She was involved in a highly controversial court case

TONY DAVIDSON, aged 90

The face of the Royal Navy, he was on recruitment posters for years. He was involved in a famous funeral and became a science fiction actor.

JIM LAWRENCE, aged 90

The youngest Thames Barge captain, he became an expert sailmaker, working on well-known TV programmes. Also he was a local entertainer in his native Essex.

ARTHUR BOYT, aged 85

A civil servant from Watford, he became famous for living off roadkill and dead animals he found on the beach – once causing a national outcry at Christmas time

PEGGIE LYNCH, aged 97

Widowed with six young children, she became a Liverpool foster carer, helping hundreds of young babies. Her life was dedicated to helping young people.

DESMOND STANFORD, aged 101

A Norfolk car mechanic who joined the Royal Navy and ended up a hero on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day.

JOAN BARTHOLOMEW, aged 97

Singer, dancer and beauty queen, she met and married comedian Eric Morecambe. She was his devoted partner, giving him tremendous support and was a widow for many years.

DON SUTHERLAND, aged 103

A conscientious objector during the war, he worked in a famous farming community. Constantly activating for peace, he finally appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe.
