FRIDA, aged 13

A labrador retriever working for the Mexican Navy she rescued many people during disasters throughout Central America and became a national hero.

SUNAO TSUBOI, aged 96

A student in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was detonated, he was lucky to survive. A thwarted romance led to a suicide pact but he lived to be a teacher and campaigner for peace.

BAXTER BLACK, aged 77

Starting as a vet and a rodeo star he accidentally found himself a radio and television star and also a writer of cowboy inspired poetry.

BETTY PHARES, aged 97

A singer and dancer she entertained troops during the war and starred in films supporting The Three Stooges, before becoming a big band singer.

ROMMY HUNT REVSON, aged 79

A talented New York nightclub singer, she had problems with her hair. So, she invented a hair accessory which she named after her dog – and became a millionaire.

MARY ELLIN BARRETT, aged 95

Born into a wealthy New York family, her father was the famous composer Irving Berlin. She wrote the seminal biography of her father to try to correct his public image.

MILKHA SINGH, aged 91

Most of his family were killed in the Indian Partition, but he escaped to join the Indian army. He then became the greatest athlete in Indian history.

GAIL HALVORSEN, aged 101

A USAF pilot he was part of the Berlin Airlift. He started dropping sweets for children and became known as ‘The Candy Bomber’

SONNY BARGER, aged 83

A former soldier, he founded the Hells Angels in California. As well as many spells in prison, he clashed with the Rolling Stones at Altamont and advised on films such as Easy Rider.

JULIE GREEN, aged 60

Artist and university lecturer, she started an artistic protest at the death penalty in the United States by painting the last meals chosen by prisoners on Death Row.
