BOB RICHARDS, aged 97

An Olympic gold winning athlete who became a national hero, he was also a priest. Later he was a successful businessman and a very unsuccessful politician.

GENE NORA JESSON, aged 87

A highly skilled pilot, she was one of the Mercury 13 – training to be a woman astronaut. This never came to fruition but she was one of the Three Musketeers.

OLEG GORDIEVSKY, aged 86

A KGB officer, he became a double agent in the Cold War, spying for Britain. His escape from the USSR was audacious – but the Russians kept trying to kill him.

MIKHAIL VASENKOV, aged 79

A Russian KGB officer, he was trained as a sleeper. He lived in Peru, then as a college professor in the USA before being caught by the FBI. He was then involved in the biggest spy swap ever.
