Anne Frank’s posthumous stepsister, she hid from the Nazis in Amsterdam but was betrayed. She then survived Auschwitz and spread the word about the Holocaust.

ANGELO GUGEL, aged 90

The invaluable personal attendant to three separate popes, he was present at an assassination attempt and witnessed a miracle, but kept the papal secrets.

DAPHNE SELFE, aged 97

A model and actress, she retired when she married. In her seventies she made a comeback and became an international sensation – the oldest model in the world.

LESLIE MARR, aged 98

A well-renowned artist who also became a film maker. As a young man he was a racing driver, competing in various Grand Prix.

MIKE ‘LOFTY’ CARR, aged 101

A surveyor who joined the LRDG fighting the Axis powers in North Africa, he had many exciting exploits before becoming a POW and making a dramatic escape.

ANDREE DUMON, aged 102

A trainee nurse who joined the Comet Line (Belgian Resistance), helping airmen escape. She was captured, tortured and sentenced to die – but didn’t – just.

ROSE HANKS, aged 86

Riding in a sidecar, alongside her brother-in-law, she was the first woman ever to appear on the podium of the Isle of Man TT races but never repeated the feat.

ALLAN ‘SKILL’ COLE, aged 74

Jamaica’s most talented footballer, he played in the USA and Brazil. He was also Bob Marley’s closest friend and manager – and a bit of a rascal.

PATRICIA DAWES, aged 84
