LESLIE MARR, aged 98

A well-renowned artist who also became a film maker. As a young man he was a racing driver, competing in various Grand Prix.

MADELEINE RIFFAUD, aged 100

A French resistance fighter who was tortured by the Gestapo, she played a key role in the liberation. She later served as a journalist in various war zones.

GLORIA DEA, aged 100

The first magician ever to appear on the Las Vegas Strip, she was also an actor and dancer – but then she diasappeared. She was rediscovered when she was 99.

DON SUTHERLAND, aged 103

A conscientious objector during the war, he worked in a famous farming community. Constantly activating for peace, he finally appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe.

JAMES BUTLER, aged 90

A noted sculptor he worked with the Queen, for the Royal Mint, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Wolverhampton Wanderers and for the military – his statues are to be found in diverse places.

LOUISE TOBIN, aged 104

A talented jazz singer from Texas she sang with Benny Goodman. She discovered Frank Sinatra and made a formidable partnership with her husband Peanuts Hacko.

TED OATES, aged 101

Growing up in Huddersfield he joined the TA and the Army and had a dramatic escape through Belgium and France andwas part of the evacuation of Dunkirk. His story became the basis of a film.

GWEN BRYSON, aged 96

She grew up in extreme poverty but trained as a teacher. After recovering from TB she went on to be a much loved and respected headteacher in Suffolk.

TEKLA JUNIEWICZ, aged 116

Born in 1906 in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, she lived through two world wars and lived in Poland. She became the oldest person ever in Poland and the second oldest in the world.

ROSMARIE TRAPP, aged 93

The last surviving daughter of the Von Trapp family, made famous in the 1965 film ‘The Sound of Music’. All is not what it seems.
