MARGOT HEUMAN, aged 94

She lost her family in the Holocaust and survived concentration and labour camps, bombing and the Death March. She was the first Holocaust survivor to come out.

ROSE GIRONE, aged 113

A victim of the Nazis she was a refugee in China and the USA, eventually setting up her own business in knitwear. She was the oldest Holocaust survivor.

JOACHIM AUERBACH, aged 93

Fleeing the Nazis as a child, he made a life in Britain, but always worked to help other people in a similar situation to his younger self.

SIR BEN HELFGOTT, aged 93

After just surviving the Holocaust he came to Britain as one of the Windemere Children and went on to represent GB at two Olympic Games as a weightlifter.

TRAUTE LAFRENZ, aged 103

A medical student, she joined the White Rose Movement, protesting about the Nazis. Betrayed, she survived the concentration camps to become a doctor and teacher.

HAANAH PICK GOSLAR, aged 93

She grew up in Amsterdam, a close friend of Anne Frank. They ended up in the same concentration camp but she survived to tell Anne’s story.

DAVID WISNIA, aged 94

A young Pole who was sent to Auschwitz his singing voice saved his life. He also had a love affair in the camp before escaping and joining the American Army. He eventually became a rabbi in the USA.

INGE GINSBERG, aged 99

After escaping the Holocaust, Inge fled over the mountains to become a spy, a songwriter, a poet and a trader on the stock exchange. She then became a Heavy Metal star, entering the Eurovision Song Contest.
