POPE.L, aged 68

From a poor background he became America’s finest performance artist with many exhibitions, often very controversial and addicted to crawling the streets.

ZANDRA FLEMISTER, aged 71

The first African American female to be a Secret Service agent, protecting the President’s daughter, she suffered racism, so she resigned to become a diplomat.

ESTHER COOPER JACKSON, aged 105

A Civil Rights campaigner, she was active in many areas, including defending those wrongly accused of crimes. She gave a voice to the oppressed in her magazine.

JOYCE BRYANT, aged 95

Growing up in a strict religious family she became a singing superstar in the1950s, breaking down race barriers. She moved into opera before becoming a recluse – the forgotten superstar.

MARTHA WHITE, aged 99

Two years before the Rosa Parks incident, Martha was persecuted on a bus in Baton Rouge. It led to a bus boycott and inspired the Civil Rights Movement.

Roy Hackett, aged 93

Part of the Windrush generation coming to the UK from the Caribbean, he organised the Bristol Bus Boycott , which led to the first race relations legislation.
