ED SMYLIE, aged 95

An aeronautical engineer who worked for NASA, he saved the lives of the three astronauts on Apollo 13 by a piece of brilliant improvisation.

BRADFORD FREEMAN, aged 97

A farm boy from Mississippi, he fought with Easy Company throughout World War 2 and got severely injured. He was the last survivor of the Band of Brothers.

ESTHER COOPER JACKSON, aged 105

A Civil Rights campaigner, she was active in many areas, including defending those wrongly accused of crimes. She gave a voice to the oppressed in her magazine.

DORIS DERBY, aged 82

At the forefront of the Civil Rights movement, she attended the March on Washington before photographing images of racism and the struggle for equality in the USA.

MARTHA WHITE, aged 99

Two years before the Rosa Parks incident, Martha was persecuted on a bus in Baton Rouge. It led to a bus boycott and inspired the Civil Rights Movement.
