VANILLA BEANE, aged 103

A self-taught seamstress and milliner, she worked past 100, making hats for all occasions. Her work is recognised in both museums and on a US postal stamp.

PAUL STEPHENSON, aged 87

A civil rights activist who led the Bristol Bus Boycott, which led to the law on race being changed in the UK . He also led a famous sit-in, in a Bristol pub.

ESTHER COOPER JACKSON, aged 105

A Civil Rights campaigner, she was active in many areas, including defending those wrongly accused of crimes. She gave a voice to the oppressed in her magazine.

DORIS DERBY, aged 82

At the forefront of the Civil Rights movement, she attended the March on Washington before photographing images of racism and the struggle for equality in the USA.
