A designer of women’s underwear, he became a beekeeper after going bust and designed a revolutionary suit to protect people from bee stings.

JOHN DONALD, aged 94

A young goldsmith and designer he came to prominence when patronised by the Royal Family. His jewellery was innovative and original – and very expensive.

BRIAN ROBINSON, aged 91

A joiner from Huddersfield, he represented GB at the 1952 Olympics before becoming the first British cyclist to complete the Tour de France and then win a stage. A pioneer for the later golden age of British cycling.

DAVID SUTHERLAND, aged 89

Cartoonist who drew The Bash Street Kids for 60 years, as well as Dennis the Menace and Biffo the Bear – but questions were raised in Parliament.
