With her husband she fought apartheid in her native South Africa before being forced into exile. A friend of the Mandelas she continued the struggle in London.

JULIAN BAHULA, aged 85

An innovative jazz drummer, he became politically active and fled his native South Africa. In the UK, he raised awareness about Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment.

MELODY MILLER, aged 77

After an inspirational meeting with President Kennedy whilst still a teenager, she became a trusted aide to all of of the Kennedy family for her entire career.

THERESA STEWART, aged 90

An Oxford graduate, she became a pioneering Labour Councillor in Birmingham – the only woman to lead the council. She was Mayor of the city but was hated by the right-wing press.
