A university lecturer and GP, who treated Oxford’s elite, he was a medical research pioneer, but eventually he suffered a terrible personal tragedy.

KANCHHA SHERPA, aged 92

After a poverty-stricken upbringing, he was selected as a sherpa for the 1953 expedition to conquer Mount Everest. He was the last survivor of that mission.

SYLVAIN SAUDAN, aged 87

An extreme skier, he completed 23 first descents of mountains, invented a new sport and skiing style and broke world records and cheated death on two occasions.

HILAREE NELSON, aged 49

An American skiier and mountaineer, she set many climbing and descending records. Known for her fearlessness, she met a tragic end.
