A judo champion, a professional wrestler and a boxer, he became a Hollywood stuntman appearing in many famous films and popular television programmes.

DON GEHRMANN, aged 94

A legendary university runner who broke many world records and appeared at the Olympics, he was involved in a famous race that took nearly a year to sort out.

OLGA FIKOTOVA, aged 91

A gold medal winning Olympic athlete from Czechoslovakia, she broke down Cold War barriers by falling in love with an American – to the fury of her country’s authorities.

SIR BEN HELFGOTT, aged 93

After just surviving the Holocaust he came to Britain as one of the Windemere Children and went on to represent GB at two Olympic Games as a weightlifter.

DAVID DUSHMAN, aged 98

Fencing played a big part in his life. He was the man who liberated Auschwitz – and went on to coach the USSR fencing team in the Olympics.

MIKE BURROWS, aged 79

The greatest ever bike designer. He invented the recumbent bike, won GB an Olympic gold, led the Tour de France and starred in 2 tv shows.
