An Olympic gold winning athlete who became a national hero, he was also a priest. Later he was a successful businessman and a very unsuccessful politician.

DON WALSH, aged 92

One of the world’s great explorers, he was the first person to visit the bottom of the Mariana Trench in the Pacific – but remained relatively unknown.

JOSEPH KITTINGER, aged 94

A test pilot who was involved in space research, he completed the world’s highest skydive. He broke many world records but also became a prisoner of war.
