MIKE ‘LOFTY’ CARR, aged 101

A surveyor who joined the LRDG fighting the Axis powers in North Africa, he had many exciting exploits before becoming a POW and making a dramatic escape.

SHIGEICHI NEGISHI, aged 100

A former prisoner of war, he owned an electrical company and invented the karaoke machine – although he didn’t make any money from it. He made people happy.

JOSEPH KITTINGER, aged 94

A test pilot who was involved in space research, he completed the world’s highest skydive. He broke many world records but also became a prisoner of war.
