MIKE ‘LOFTY’ CARR, aged 101

A surveyor who joined the LRDG fighting the Axis powers in North Africa, he had many exciting exploits before becoming a POW and making a dramatic escape.

RAYMOND WHITWELL, aged 105

A military veteran who made a daring escape from Dunkirk, he did the same thing after the disastrous Battle of Arnhem -eventually becoming the last survivor.

NORTON LEE, aged 98

After surviving the Arctic Convoys and wartime missions to Sicily, Salerno and Malta, he played a key role in D-Day. He was present at the Nazi surrender in the Netherlands and retired to be a huntsman.

ASSUNTA ‘PUPETTA’ MARESCA, aged 86

Brought up in a Mafia family, her husband was murdered by a gang rival. She took bloody revenge, and after serving time in prison became a Mafia gang leader in her own right.

ROSSANA BANTI, aged 96

Red in name, red in dress, red in politics, Rossana was one of the “Terrible Girls of Rome”, in the Italian Resistance during the war. Later she was part of the SOE – code number 007. In later life she was a television producer.
