A Soviet businessman turned politician, he was appointed the last ever head of the KGB, reforming it – and making himself unpopular with the authorities.

BOB RICHARDS, aged 97

An Olympic gold winning athlete who became a national hero, he was also a priest. Later he was a successful businessman and a very unsuccessful politician.

MARCUS KLINGBERG, aged 97

A Polish Jew who fought for the Red Army in the war, he emigrated to Israel to become their leading scientist – but all along he was a spy for the USSR.

VALERY RYUMIN, aged 82

Initially a rocket engineer he became a cosmonaut, spending a record amount of time in space and being the oldest man in space. He also appeared at the Olympics

ESTEBAN VOLKOV, aged 97

Persecuted from a young age, he had a famous revolutionary grandfather and witnessed one of the most notorious political assassinations of the 20th century.

MAGDA SALEH, aged 79

After being trained with the Bolshoi ballet she became Egypt’s prima ballerina and first decorated woman. She became a doctor, teacher and artistic director.
