A legendary university runner who broke many world records and appeared at the Olympics, he was involved in a famous race that took nearly a year to sort out.

A Mexican clown who dressed as a child and acted the fool, he captivated audiences throughout the whole of Latin America for a record number of years.

ROSE GIRONE, aged 113

A victim of the Nazis she was a refugee in China and the USA, eventually setting up her own business in knitwear. She was the oldest Holocaust survivor.

BETTE NASH, aged 88

Originally a legal secretary she became an air stewardess – and went on to break the record as the longest serving flight attendant in the world.

JUDY HASHMAN, aged 88

A superb all-round sportswoman she represented the USA in many sports but excelled at badminton. She became badminton’s greatest female player of all time.

AGNES LABOR, aged 96

The first qualified black woman teacher in Leeds, she became an influential educator before moving into politics in her native country of Sierra Leone.

HAL WATTS, aged 89

He became a scuba diver by accident but went on to break world records. Also he raised the safety standard of the sport and trained many other divers.

BALTAZAR USHCA, aged 80

From rural Ecuador he was the last Iceman, digging out ice from the mountains of the Andes with only help from his donkey – and selling it at local markets.
