Researching and reporting on the lives of some really interesting people (RIP)

OLGA FIKOTOVA, aged 91

A gold medal winning Olympic athlete from Czechoslovakia, she broke down Cold War barriers by falling in love with an American – to the fury of her country’s authorities.

JEAN VELOZ, aged 98

A competitive dancer who helped popularize Swing and the Lindy Hop, she became a film and TV star and a noted teacher – and was still dancing into her 90s.

TATJANA PATITZ, aged 56

The first German supermodel, she was the face of the 1990s, appearing on many magazine covers – but became a champion of animal rights and for ageing gracefully.

DOTTIE FRAZIER, aged 99

She saved her sister’s life, water skiied with a broken leg, fought a shark, rode with a snake and won an Olympic gold medal. An amazing woman!

MARIE WILCOX, aged 87

A native American from California, she was the last person to speak her tribal language. She set about re-introducing it and saving it for future generations.

BETTY PHARES, aged 97

A singer and dancer she entertained troops during the war and starred in films supporting The Three Stooges, before becoming a big band singer.
