VADIM BAKATIN, aged 84

A Soviet businessman turned politician, he was appointed the last ever head of the KGB, reforming it – and making himself unpopular with the authorities.

OLEG GORDIEVSKY, aged 86

A KGB officer, he became a double agent in the Cold War, spying for Britain. His escape from the USSR was audacious – but the Russians kept trying to kill him.

EIRWEN HARBOTTLE, aged 100

Working in espionage during the war, she became a broadcaster before co-founding an international peace moment, and writing an influential & successful musical.

IDA NUDEL, aged 90

Born in the USSR of Jewish extraction she was a refusenik, campaigning to leave Russia. Imprisoned for her protests she was eventually exiled.

ROLAND MESNIER, aged 78

Learned his trade in France, he became chief pastry chef at the White House, serving 5 presidents and never cooking the same meal twice.

MICHAEL BOURDEAUX, aged 87

Michael founded Keston College in Bromley which was dedicated to the spreading of reliable religious information in communist countries. He was awarded the Templeton Prize for his work.
