HEBE DE BONAFINI, aged 93

An Argentinian housewife, both her sons were kidnapped and murdered during the Dirty War. She set up the ‘Mothers of the Disappeared to protest – but became a controversial character.

MIGUEL ETCHECOLATZ, aged 93

A policeman in Argentina in the 1970s and 1980s, he was a torturer and killer during the Dirty War. It took years to bring him to justice – but he never repented.

MARTHA WHITE, aged 99

Two years before the Rosa Parks incident, Martha was persecuted on a bus in Baton Rouge. It led to a bus boycott and inspired the Civil Rights Movement.

PADDY HOPKIRK, aged 89

A brilliant rally driver from Northern Ireland, he was excommunicated from the Catholic church before winning the Monte Carlo Rally and appearing on the London stage. He bravely saved the life of a rival and won the MBE.

GENERAL EVA BURROWS, aged 85

An Australian who rebelled against her Salvation Army background, she rejoined and rose to be the General of the Salvation Army, spreading the message around the world.

GWEN BRYSON, aged 96

She grew up in extreme poverty but trained as a teacher. After recovering from TB she went on to be a much loved and respected headteacher in Suffolk.

FRIDA, aged 13

A labrador retriever working for the Mexican Navy she rescued many people during disasters throughout Central America and became a national hero.

JUSTUS ROSENBERG, aged 100

A refugee from Poland he became an active member of the French Resistance with a dramatic escape from the Nazis. In later life a professor in universities.

THERESA STEWART, aged 90

An Oxford graduate, she became a pioneering Labour Councillor in Birmingham – the only woman to lead the council. She was Mayor of the city but was hated by the right-wing press.

SUNAO TSUBOI, aged 96

A student in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb was detonated, he was lucky to survive. A thwarted romance led to a suicide pact but he lived to be a teacher and campaigner for peace.
