SHEILA PAINE, aged 92

An artist who abandoned her studies for love, she became a world expert on embroidery after a family tragedy, travelling throughout the world’s dangerous places in search of new textiles.

MONIQUE HANOTTE, aged 101

A Belgian schoolgirl who joined the Comet Line, rescuing Allied airmen from the Nazis, she was forced into a daring escape herself.

BRUCE ROPNER, aged 89

He became an accidental champion bobsleigher, once partnering a notorious murderer. He loved speed, created his own racetrack and spotted young athletic talent.

AMOU HAJI, aged 94

A hermit who lived in the desert region of Iran, he refused to wash for over 60 years. When he finally did – it killed him.

MARGARET KEANE, aged 94

A successful painter she was the victim of a major art fraud caused by her husband – leading to a paint-off in court.

MEHRAN KARIMI NASSERI, aged 77

Thrown out of Iran, he lost his papers and was a refugee trapped in Charles de Gaulle airport where he lived for 18 years – and inspired a film.

TED OATES, aged 101

Growing up in Huddersfield he joined the TA and the Army and had a dramatic escape through Belgium and France andwas part of the evacuation of Dunkirk. His story became the basis of a film.

DOMINIC HOPKINS, aged 57

A talented musician, ill health took his life into other directions but he returned to music. He ultimately died in tragic circumstances.

ROLAND MESNIER, aged 78

Learned his trade in France, he became chief pastry chef at the White House, serving 5 presidents and never cooking the same meal twice.
